The Pre-Purchase Checklist for a Used Golf Cart

A used golf cart can be a great deal — or a project you didn’t sign up for. The difference usually comes down to five minutes of checking before you buy, not after. Here’s what to look at.

1. Batteries

Batteries are the single most expensive thing you’ll replace on a golf cart, so start here. Ask when they were last replaced, and if possible, test the voltage with a multimeter — a healthy 6V battery should read close to its rated voltage under load, and a full bank should charge evenly across all cells. Uneven charging or a bank that’s a mix of ages is a sign you’ll be replacing batteries sooner than you’d like.

2. Tires and Frame

Check tire tread and look for uneven wear, which can point to alignment issues. Then get down and look underneath: rust, bent supports, loose hardware, or fluid drips from anything that should stay sealed are all worth asking about directly. A little surface rust on an older cart is normal; structural rust or a visibly bent frame member is not.

3. Controller and Electrical System

Take it for a real test drive, not just a lap around the driveway. Listen for hesitation, jerky acceleration, or inconsistent power, which can point to a failing controller or solenoid. Check the wiring for cracked insulation, corrosion, or amateur splices — a cart that’s been “fixed” with electrical tape is telling you something about how it’s been maintained.

4. Brakes

Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area. They should engage smoothly without excessive pedal travel or pulling to one side. Squealing or grinding usually means worn pads, which is a minor fix — but soft or unresponsive brakes are a bigger red flag worth having a technician check before you drive it regularly.

5. Title and Paperwork

Ask whether the cart comes with a title, and if it was ever registered as a low-speed vehicle (LSV), confirm that registration is current and matches the VIN on the vehicle. A private-party cart without clear paperwork isn’t necessarily a scam, but it does mean more legwork on your end before you can register or insure it.

6. Overall History

How was it used — daily transportation, occasional weekend cart, or a rental fleet cart being sold off? Fleet and rental carts see more hours and harder use, which isn’t automatically a dealbreaker, but it should factor into what you’re willing to pay.

Buying Private-Party vs. From a Dealer

None of this is meant to scare you off a private sale — plenty of great carts change hands that way. But it does mean the inspection burden is entirely on you. When you buy from a dealer, that inspection has typically already happened before the cart ever hits the lot.
